PSP Firmware 5.0 to offer direct PSN access?

Posted in psp News on September 29, 2008 by Andrew B. Hall

At the start of September we reported that Sony Computer Entertainment would offer direct PlayStation Network access to Japanese PlayStation Portable users. Thankfully, it appears Europe and North America will be getting the same treatment.

According to French site PSPGen (translated by Exophase), the new functionality will arrive with Firmware 5.0. You can also look forward to an RSS component update capable of reading text-based articles (rather than just audio, video or images).

PSPGen’s coverage is, admittedly, based on a development version of the firmware, so Sony could still remove (or add) features before release. We’ll serve up some release dates as soon as we get our hands on ’em.

Valhalla Knights 2 cuts into North America Oct. 1

Posted in psp News on September 5, 2008 by Andrew B. Hall

Valhalla Knights 2 finally has a solid North American release date now that the game has gone gold. October 1 is the day to mark on your calendar for this Norse-flavored RPG from XSEED. The game features six-member party battles as well as ad hoc co-op and versus battles. With a story “penned by the scenario writer of Final Fantasy XII” and a $30 price tag, we’d say there seems to be a whole lot of value in the second Valhalla Knights title.

THQ has confirmed that it has cancelled development of the upcoming PlayStation Portable version of Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed.

Speaking to IGN this week, a company representative stated, “Basically, the PSP version was cancelled because of control issues.”

“DAH! Big Willy Unleashed was designed by [a] Wii developer specifically for the Wii. When it was ported over to the PSP, the controls simply didn’t translate well, and instead of pushing out the product with translated controls, it was cancelled.”

The fourth instalment in the Destroy All Humans! Series, Path of Furon, is currently planned for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2008.

With The 3rd Birthday already announced for PSP, Square Enix thought it might be great to add one more PSP title to their ever-expanding list, Final Fantasy Agito XIII.

Again, here is a title that was previously a mobile phone exclusive, but Square Enix has decided to develop the title for the PSP as well. This is the third title in the Final Fantasy XIII universe, the other two being FFXIII and FF Versus XIII.

Square Enix has yet to reveal a release date, but you can count on it being sometime in 2009.

During the Square Enix DKΣ3713 event, Square Enix announced that The 3rd Birthday, once mobile phone exclusive, is now headed to the PSP.

According to Square Enix, The 3rd Birthday is not a sequel, which is why Parasite Eve has been excluded from the title. However, since Parasite Eve lead character Aya Brea is making an appearance, fans refer to the game as “Parasite Eve 3.”

No other details have been released, but we’ll continue to update this article as more is leaked from the DKΣ3713 event.

UPDATE:

The 3rd Birthday is set to release sometime in 2009.
